Brent Leroy (Brent Butt) is the proprietor of Corner Gas, the only gas station for 60 kilometres and Wanda (Nancy Robertson) works at the station’s convenience store as his assistant. Lacey Burrows (Gabrielle Miller) owns the coffee shop (The Ruby) that she inherited from her aunt.
Brent Butt came up with the idea of Corner Gas after wondering what his life would be like if he had not gone into stand-up comedy.
The eight main characters are: Brent, Lacey, Wanda, Davis, Karen, Emma, Oscar, and Hank. Corner Gas is a great Canadian situation comedy. The characters are brilliant and work amazingly together. The show was created by Brent Butt and friends. It is based in Saskatchewan. Characters in a small town overreact to simple situations creating multiple comic bits. Like a soap opera the main story and sub stories are interweaved in a brilliant way. Brent Leroy (Brent Butt) reads comic books and runs a gas station that he took over from his parents. He is a happy-go-lucky character and often is distracted by minor details. He loves chili cheese dogs. He plays curling, hockey, and golf among other sports.
Brent's friend, "Hank", Richard "Hank" Yarbo is a free spirit and brings Brent into his adventures or misadventures. He is generally unemployed and could be called Dog River's village idiot. He spends his time at Corner Gas telling Brent everything that is on his mind. He's always borrowing money without ever paying it back. He has never paid his tab at The Ruby (the coffee shop). He wears a had to hide the fact that everyday is bad hair day for him. When he has worked he has been a rodeo clown, a crossing guard and even a city accountant. Pop Rocks and pickles are his favourite food and it's the only food that he keeps stocked at home. Even though he is the best candidate for village idiot he is known to be good at gardening and woodworking. Oh and his middle name is Henry. If you watch regularly that will mean something to you. At this very moment I don't remember what the story was about "Henry" but I will find out.
Lacey Burrows (Gabrielle Miller) is a newcomer from Toronto, Ontario. She inherited The Ruby (the local coffee shop) from aunt. She is always trying too hard to fit into the small town ways. She is a bad liar, a bad sport and isn't that good at mathematics. She is always questioning if she could have done more with her life. She is looking for a stable partner in life. She shares a lot of time with Brent. Did I mention anyone can watch this show. Oh wait .....there was one episode which would be a little risky. I won't tell you which one I'm talking about just in case you are a younger reader. I will have an episode list so if you have to know you will know.
Oscar Leroy (Eric Peterson) is Brent's nutty (senile?) father. He used to own Corner Gas. He is very demanding especially of the Dog River police. He always wants someone arrested. His favourite word is "jackass" and says Holy hell when he is startled.
Emma Leroy (Janet Wright) is Brent's mother. She is the strong and smart leader of the family. She threw a cinder block at a raccoon once. She is always bailing Oscar out of his misadventures. She is very protective of Brent. Wanda Dollard (Nancy Robertson) is Brent's wise-cracking assistant in the gas station. She is a proud know-it-all. She is a single mother of a son. She is university educated.
Karen and Davis are the not so by-the-book cops that make you like cops.
Sergeant Davis Quinton (Lorne Cardinal) is a sensitive senior police officer in Dog River. He is very irresponsible with police funds. He makes up laws as goes along. His catch phrase is "All right!"
Constable Karen Pelly (Tara Spencer-Nairn) is very job-minded junior police officer in Dog River. She is known to be able to hold her breath for a long time (6 minutes). She's a very good cook but doesn't want it known.
Fitzy Fizgerald (Cavan Cunningham) is the mayor of Dog River.
Wes Humboldt (Mike O'Brien) owns and operates the liquor and insurance store in town.
Paul Kinistino (Mark Dieter) is the bartender at the Dog River Hotel.
